City identity refers to the unique character, culture, and essence that define a city. It encompasses the physical, social, historical, and emotional aspects that make a city distinct from others.
This identity is shaped by a combination of tangible elements, such as architecture, landmarks, and infrastructure, as well as intangible factors like community values, traditions, and reputation. Let’s take a closer look at some of them here.

Protecting old buildings in a city is crucial for maintaining its identity, as these structures serve as tangible links to the past, and help shape the city’s cultural and architectural character. They tell the story of a city’s evolution, its unique traditions, craftsmanship, and historical events. These structures foster a sense of belonging and pride among residents. In addition, well-preserved old buildings attract tourists, boosting local businesses and strengthening the economy. Figure 1 presents an example of old buildings.

Landmarks play a crucial role in reinforcing a city’s identity by acting as visual, cultural, and historical symbols. By preserving its cultural legacy, iconic landmarks attract visitors and help shape the global perception of a city. Figure 2 shows examples of landmarks.

Parks also play a vital role in shaping how a city is experienced and remembered. As urban landmarks, they both reflect and reinforce the city’s identity. Some parks are rooted in a city’s historical narrative. They may commemorate important events, celebrate national figures, or preserve ancient landmarks. Hyde Park in London, with its rich history, embodies to the British values and civic life (Figure 3). In addition, parks are often the heart of social life. They create spaces for community bonding, recreation, and daily rituals—fostering build a sense of identity not only for the city but for its people as well.

City identity is important because it shapes how a city is perceived by its residents, visitors, and businesses. It’s the “soul” of the city, encapsulating what makes it unique and meaningful.
